In a quiet corner of Austin, a little dog named Jasper was fighting a battle much bigger than himself. Just a year old, he found himself wandering the streets, a mere shadow of what a dog could be. When Austin Pets Alive (APA) took him in, they discovered a fragile soul: underweight and suffering from severe anxiety, with a coat marred by mange. The world had not been kind to Jasper, and now he faced an uphill struggle to heal.
Even after being adopted by Tom Paradis, the journey was far from smooth. Tom’s girlfriend, Rachel Billings, recalls, “He had been adopted and returned to APA twice before Tom took him in, because he had such severe anxiety issues.” The trembling little pup feared everything—from the simplest walk outside to the confines of a car. Each day was a daunting new challenge.

Seeking to create a brighter path for Jasper, Tom made a pivotal decision: he would foster a puppy. He hoped that a friend might help Jasper face the world, diminishing the shadows of his fears. Returning to APA, he met a spirited puppy named Ernie, a tiny pit bull whose boundless energy was a stark contrast to Jasper’s timid demeanor. Rescued from a high-kill shelter along with his mother and siblings, Ernie was a vibrant ray of sunshine, eager to embrace life.
Though Ernie quickly charmed Tom and Rachel, Jasper remained uncertain about this new addition to the family. “Jasper wasn’t a fan of Ernie at first,” Rachel admitted. Yet, Tom was convinced. “Having another dog around would help Jasper come out of his shell,” he believed. Thus, Ernie became a permanent member of the family, embarking on a journey of friendship that no one quite expected.

Gradually, Ernie’s sunny disposition began to break through Jasper’s walls of fear. “Ernie helped Jasper learn to play and explore and just enjoy being a dog,” Rachel reflected, capturing the magic of their developing bond. Over time, the timid Jasper transformed, growing in confidence with Ernie at his side. The two became inseparable, navigating the world together in a way that once seemed unimaginable for Jasper.
Now around six years old, Jasper has blossomed into a joyful companion who participates in outings, swimming, and making new friends—always with Ernie at his side, his steadfast protector. “Ernie loves going on outings with us—he thinks Home Depot is just a giant fun-house full of people who are there for HIM,” Rachel shared, laughing at Ernie’s zest for life. While Jasper still shies away from crowded places, the arrival of Ernie gave him the strength to venture beyond the confines of his fears.

Inspired by the positive impact of fostering Ernie, Tom and Rachel decided to open their hearts and home to more dogs in need. Their fostering journey expanded, bringing joy and hope to numerous dogs who arrived and, just like Ernie, found their forever homes—thanks in part to Jasper’s acceptance. Although Jasper remained indifferent to the new arrivals, the mere fact that he accepted them was a monumental step forward.
The family has successfully fostered and helped ten dogs find their homes to date, with plans to continue their mission. Jasper may still have moments of anxiety, but the comfort of having Ernie by his side makes the world seem less threatening. Just a few years ago, Jasper was a frightened boy alone in the streets; now, he is a testament to the healing power of love, companionship, and the unwavering spirit of his little brother, Ernie.
