In a heartwarming twist of fate, Mandy Cotta was captivated by a special puppy while watching The Puppy Bowl last November. Among the fluffy players, one stood out – Twilight Sparkles, a spirited 6-month-old pup with a striking blonde mohawk and an extraordinary story of resilience. As she scored the game-winning touchdown, Cotta couldn’t help but feel an instant connection, describing Twilight as a “real-life unicorn.”

Twilight’s journey to that moment was anything but easy. Born with a genetic skull defect, she faced daunting challenges from the very beginning. Rescued as a stray alongside her parents in Texas, she was brought to a local shelter where time was running out. “The shelter had put her on the euthanasia list as they did not have the space or capability of managing her,” Cotta explained. Just in the nick of time, Hearts & Bones Rescue intervened, bringing Twilight to Brooklyn, New York, where she could begin to heal.

Life in foster care provided Twilight a chance to decompress and access the medical care she desperately needed for her seizures. On the outside, she was undeniably unique: a tan puppy with a prominent ridge on her skull and a tuft of blonde hair that evolved into a fluffy, vibrant mohawk. But it wasn’t until a visit to the neurologist that her caregivers began to understand the full extent of her condition. “[The mohawk is] a result of a congenital skull malformation, a bone ridge that runs along her forehead,” Cotta noted. And, sadly, she was missing a part of her corpus callosum, the essential connection between the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
Yet despite her challenges, Twilight radiated the same playful spirit typical of a puppy her age. With determination and an unyielding zest for life, she soon found her forever home with Cotta, merging seamlessly into her family of four rescued siblings: Maya, Oliver, Rylie, and Pipp. Cotta lovingly says, “One of Twilight’s superpowers is that she has no clue she’s different. She tackles everything with determination and positivity and never gives up.”

Although she sometimes faces coordination issues, struggling with stairs and furniture, Twilight refuses to let anything dampen her spirits. Every time she tumbles, she bounces back with a joyous smile, as Cotta observes, “She always gets up happier and stronger.” With her first birthday approaching in May, Twilight’s life is a celebration of triumph and love — touching those around her in ways words can hardly express.
From a vulnerable stray to a TV sensation, Twilight’s journey is nothing short of miraculous. Not only has she found her family who cherishes her, but she embodies sweetness and affection that melts hearts. As Cotta describes, “When she wants more pets, she rolls on her back and makes a ‘rawr’ face like a little dinosaur.”
Though Twilight is a medical miracle, to her family, she is so much more: a brilliant light that brightens every room she enters, a source of unconditional love and joy. Cotta reflects on her experience with Twilight, saying, “We are filling her life with joy, as she is with us. I honestly feel lucky to be around her every day.”
