In a heartwarming twist of fate, one fluffy puppy stole the spotlight during The Puppy Bowl last November. Her name? Twilight Sparkles, a captivating 6-month-old pup with a distinct genetic skull defect that made her truly one of a kind. Mandy Cotta could hardly believe her eyes as she watched Twilight, affectionately known as Twilight, sprint across the field to score the game-winning touchdown. Instantaneously, Cotta was enchanted, declaring, “[S]he’s a real-life unicorn,” to The Dodo.
Yet, beneath Twilight’s charm and playful spirit lay a story of resilience. Just months earlier, she and her parents had been found as strays in Texas. They were taken to a local shelter, where Twilight’s fate hung by a thread—a reality too many animals face. “[T]he shelter had put her on the euthanasia list as they did not have the space or capability of managing her,” Cotta revealed.

But just in time, Hearts & Bones Rescue stepped in, determined to rewrite Twilight’s story. Founder Whitney Fang fostered the pup, transferring her from the harsh conditions of Texas to the bustling streets of Brooklyn, New York, hoping to find her a forever home filled with love. It was here that Twilight began to heal, not only from her traumatic past but also from seizures that had plagued her since she was rescued. Under the care of her foster family, she blossomed.
Twilight, with her striking tan coat and unique blonde tuft of hair that evolved into a vibrant mohawk, was different from the rest. Her neurological journey would reveal the truth behind her striking appearance. “[The mohawk is] a result of a congenital skull malformation, a bone ridge that runs along her forehead,” Cotta explained further. “She was born with a brain anomaly: She is missing part of her corpus callosum, the part of her brain that connects the left and right sides.” Despite these hurdles, her spirited nature shone through.

Twilight quickly transitioned into her new home after being happily adopted by Cotta. Their bond was instantaneous, easily integrating Twilight into her loving pack of four other rescued siblings—Maya, Oliver, Rylie, and Pipp. “One of Twilight’s superpowers is that she has no clue she’s different,” Cotta humorously noted. “She tackles everything with determination and positivity and never gives up.” Each day became a testament to Twilight’s spirit, as she navigated the world with infectious joy and determination.
Though she occasionally faced challenges like climbing stairs or leaping onto furniture, her resilience was unwavering. Every time she stumbled, she would bounce back with a smile, proving time and again her unbreakable spirit. “[S]he always gets up happier and stronger,” Cotta shared. “She is beyond charming. We joke that when I have to lift her in the car, she looks at me with pride like she did it all on her own.”

With her first birthday approaching in May, Twilight’s story is one of triumphant celebration. She not only survived being a vulnerable stray but also became a TV sensation and finally found a forever home, lavished with the unconditional love she deserves. “Twilight is extremely sweet and affectionate. Her gentle demeanor is heart-melting,” Cotta reflected. “When she wants more pets, she rolls on her back and makes a ‘rawr’ face like a little dinosaur.”
Twilight’s journey is a poignant reminder that every being has a story, and she is a living testament to the power of love and resilience. Her undeniable charm lights up every room she enters, and she has brought immeasurable joy to those around her. “[W]e are filling her life with joy, as she is with us,” Cotta expressed sincerely. “I honestly feel lucky to be around her every day.”
