A Bitter Cold Night
On a frigid evening in Mississippi, while most families nestled under warm blankets, a small stray dog fought to survive the night alone. Curled tightly on a torn couch discarded beside a dumpster, she attempted to shield herself from the biting wind that pierced the darkness.

The worn cushions provided little protection against the icy air. Her frail body trembled uncontrollably, and her wide, soulful eyes scanned the empty lot, silently pleading for someone to notice her plight and offer their help.
A Heartfelt Discovery
That someone was Lisa Reams. Cozy in her bed, she received a message that would alter the course of the night. A worried neighbor had spotted the shivering stray and sent a heart-wrenching photo. The sight of the pup’s thin frame huddled against the cold stirred Lisa’s compassion.

Lisa didn’t hesitate. She hurriedly slipped on her shoes and drove into the night, still dressed in her pajamas. “My heart broke because I knew how cold it was outside,” she later shared. “I wasn’t going to rest until I had her safe and warm.”
An Emotional Reunion
Upon her arrival, the scene was even more heartbreaking. The couch sagged, surrounded by towering trash bins, while the air cut sharply with winter chill. There, on the tattered cushions, was the forlorn dog. Their eyes met, and in that moment, everything changed.

The pup slowly lifted her head. Despite the shivering that wracked her body, she wagged her tail—a small but powerful gesture that spoke volumes. She yearned for trust, for affection, and for a second chance at life.
A Gentle Embrace
Lisa approached with care, her voice soft and soothing. The dog, later named Cammi, didn’t shy away. Instead, she leaned into the warmth of the rescuer’s presence, allowing Lisa to gently fasten a leash around her collar. With tentative steps, Cammi descended from the couch, following Lisa to the truck as if she had been waiting for this moment forever.
Finding Comfort and Safety
As soon as they were inside the vehicle, warmth enveloped her. A thick blanket lay ready in the back seat, and the seat warmers buzzed with life, offering a comforting embrace. Cammi curled into the soft fabric and pressed her small body against it. At long last, she stopped shaking.
“She was so relaxed and slept all the way home,” Lisa recalled. It was as if, for the first time that night, she felt safe enough to finally rest.
Embracing a Joyful Future
At just one and a half years old, Cammi quickly began adapting to a life of warmth and love—no more dumpsters, no more cold nights, and no more waiting alone. “She is adapting brilliantly to the good life,” said Rachel Larkin, director of social media for NYC Second Chance Rescue. “She loves to sun herself, run around outside, and melt into any affection she is shown.”
In her foster environment, Cammi’s personality blossomed. She revels in sunny spots by the window and bounds joyfully across the yard. Most importantly, she leans into every gentle touch, finally receiving the love she had long been denied.
A New Beginning Awaits
The once-frightened dog who trembled on that broken couch now sleeps peacefully indoors. Her eyes shine brighter, and her tail wags freely. The fear that once held her captive has transformed into a budding trust.
Soon, Cammi will embark on a journey to New York, where she will be available for adoption through NYC Second Chance Rescue. Her rescuers are optimistic that the next chapter of her life will include a forever family of her own. And even if she has to wait a little longer, she will never again face the cold alone. A nurturing foster home stands ready to guide her forward, ensuring her journey is filled with warmth and care.
