Gregg Wexler never anticipated that one small dog would embody resilience in such a profound and personal way. What began as a simple adoption quickly transformed into a lifelong journey filled with unexpected challenges, deep compassion, and unwavering devotion.
From the very first moment, Sammy illuminated Gregg’s life with warmth and energy. However, over the years, he would evolve into a powerful symbol of courage. Through hardship, recovery, and unyielding perseverance, this little dog would touch countless hearts, extending far beyond the walls of his home.
Sammy, a lovable dachshund and chihuahua mix, entered Gregg’s life as a playful seven-month-old puppy rescued from a gas chamber in the South. Bursting with energy and perfectly healthy, he was a beacon of hope, and Gregg recognized something extraordinary in him, providing the safe, loving home he had always deserved.
Yet, years later, that bond would face unimaginable trials. At just three years old, Sammy suffered a devastating spinal injury. It was a grim turning point — whether it stemmed from intervertebral disk disease or a misstep in the yard, the outcome was equally tragic. He was left paralyzed for weeks. Despite extensive treatment and over $60,000 in medical care, Sammy would never regain the ability to walk normally again.
His life altered overnight. Once simple joys like dashing across the yard or even just going to the bathroom turned into daily challenges. Sammy learned to navigate the world in a wheelchair and required hands-on assistance for basic bodily functions due to nerve damage. At one point, a rare and complex genital procedure, more commonly performed on cats, became a necessity to save his life. Sammy had to endure four major surgeries, each steeped in uncertainty, yet he greeted every hurdle with quiet resilience.
And despite everything he had endured, Sammy lived not like a dog burdened by suffering, but like a soul unreservedly in love with life. Inside the house, he moved with unwavering determination. Outside, once secured in his wheelchair, he became a force of nature, faster than anyone would dare to imagine. Gregg describes him as having only one speed. Fast. With no hesitation or sense of limitation, Sammy didn’t see himself as different; instead, what radiated most was his joy.
His tail wagged freely, and his eyes sparkled at the sight of children. He leaned eagerly into every pet, every kind word, and every moment of connection. Wherever he went, people took notice. Sammy became something of a local celebrity, drawing crowds who wanted to meet the dog who inspired them. Strangers often asked about his story, many leaving feeling deeply moved by a dog who refused to be defined by hardship.
A few years ago, his impact was recognized in a touching way: Sammy inspired a special-needs dog design that featured on a shirt sold by Freedom Park, a local park known for its off-leash dog area where dogs can mingle and play. This tribute was but a small acknowledgment to a dog who had already touched so many lives.
Most recently, Sammy showcased his playful spirit by winning six consecutive Halloween costume contests in 2025. Each victory punctuated his growing reputation, but for Sammy, it was simply another opportunity to enjoy the fun.
Gregg once dreamed of training Sammy to be a therapy dog, a prospect put on hold after the accident. Nonetheless, Sammy fulfills that role in many ways each day. His mere presence brings comfort and joy to everyone lucky enough to cross his path. He has visited community spaces, including the Boys and Girls Club and holds an honorary membership in the Miracle League of Mercer County. Soon, he will participate in a Special Olympics event in New Jersey, continuing to blind the world with his quiet message of resilience.
Sammy is blissfully unaware of how different he is. He doesn’t dwell on what he can’t do; instead, each day begins with a readiness to move, love, and live completely. In doing so, he beautifully reminds everyone who meets him that true strength is not determined by physical ability, but by the heart.
