In a bustling city, a heartwarming story unfolds, one that speaks to resilience and the profound bonds between dogs. Jasper, a once-timid rescue dog, was discovered wandering the streets at just a year old. With murky shadows of his past lingering in his mind, he arrived at Austin Pets Alive (APA) underweight, suffering from mange, and carrying the weight of severe anxiety on his shoulders.
Even after being adopted by Tom Paradis, Jasper’s new dad, the journey to recovery was fraught with challenges. “He had been adopted and returned to APA twice before Tom adopted him, because he had such severe anxiety issues,” shared Rachel Billings, Paradis’s girlfriend and Jasper’s loving mom. “Everything terrified him—people, walks, car rides—he was scared of the wider world around him.” The specter of fear loomed large in Jasper’s life, but hope was just around the corner.

Determined to illuminate Jasper’s dark corners of anxiety, Paradis had a brilliant idea: fostering a puppy. He believed that perhaps with a little companion by his side, Jasper would begin to see the world in a softer light. It was then he met Ernie, an exuberant pit bull puppy, who seemed bursting with life as he wagged his tail at the APA. Rescued from a high-kill shelter along with his mom and siblings, Ernie was a ray of sunshine, ready to change the lives around him.
While Ernie thrived in his new home, Jasper remained cautious. At first, he wasn’t quite sure about this lively little brother. As Rachel recalled, “Jasper wasn’t a fan of Ernie at first, but Tom was smitten and believed that having another dog around would help Jasper come out of his shell a bit more.” Their bond began tentatively, but there was something magical in the air—Ernie was a beacon of courage and joy, the very antithesis of Jasper’s timid spirit.

With each passing day, the dynamic began to shift. Encouraged by Ernie’s fearless nature and unyielding zest for life, Jasper slowly ventured out of his shell, discovering the joys of play and exploration. “Ernie helped Jasper learn to play and enjoy being a dog,” Billings reflected. It wasn’t long before the new brothers became inseparable, with Jasper blossoming into a creature of confidence and joy.
Now at six years old, Jasper has transformed in ways his parents never imagined possible. He dives into the park’s inviting waters, makes new friends, and ventures into new experiences—all with Ernie by his side. Rachel mused, “Ernie thinks Home Depot is a giant fun-house filled with people for him. While we still can’t take Jasper to crowded places because it’s too traumatic for him, he is always delighted when Ernie comes home.” The unconditional companionship of Ernie had unveiled a brave new world for Jasper.

Inspired by the change in their lives, Paradis and Billings have embraced fostering more frequently, welcoming new pups into their loving home. While Jasper remains indifferent towards the newcomers, Ernie couldn’t be happier. His innate purpose shines through as he mentors and comforts the pups, ensuring they feel loved and safe. Billings noted how Ernie often plays referee during those rowdy playdates, showing gentleness and patience, a testament to his nurturing spirit.
Each foster they bring in is met with open hearts, and the family has found forever homes for ten dogs thus far. As they plan to take in more, the bond between Jasper and Ernie stands as a poignant reminder that love and companionship can heal even the deepest scars. Jasper may still encounter moments of anxiety, but with Ernie steadfastly by his side, he faces the world with newfound courage and hope.
