Marcus, a 2-year-old patterdale terrier-lab mix, was surrendered by his owner to a UK animal rescue after just 5 weeks. The reason? Excessive barking. But thanks to the dedication of Lucie’s Animal Rescue, this sweet pup is getting the training he needs and awaiting adoption into a forever home.

Barking is Natural Dog Behavior

Dogs bark to communicate, express excitement and even anxiety. As Lucie’s Animal Rescue wrote on Facebook, “Barking is how dogs communicate, and express their fears, and also excitement.”

Marcus’ owner made no effort to understand this normal dog behavior or put in training to curb the barking. As the only solution, she tried to have Marcus euthanized and when the vet refused, dropped him at the animal rescue.

Rescue Steps In

Fortunately, Lucie’s Animal Rescue took Marcus in. They discovered he’s a gentle, nervous dog who just wants to make friends. While boarding with other pups, Marcus displays only playful, non-aggressive barking.

“He is very nervous, and anxious but so nice for him to have some friends and more importantly….Be a dog!” the rescuers wrote.

Obedience Training & Second Chances

Marcus has started basic obedience training and is responding well – he listens attentively and follows commands.

Lucie Holmes, founder of the nonprofit rescue, told the BBC: “You have to give dogs time to settle. You wouldn’t take a toddler to nursery and expect him or her to be blissfully happy immediately.”

Spreading Awareness

Marcus’ story highlights the importance of pet commitment and proper training. Lucie’s Rescue hopes it inspires other owners to exercise more patience with their furry friends.

While his long-term adoption status remains unclear, Marcus is thriving under the rescue’s care. He continues progressing with his training and building confidence through play with other dogs.

This special pup deserves a second chance at finding a forever home. To learn more about Marcus or support other dogs in need, visit Lucie’s Animal Rescue online.
