Suzette Hall, the compassionate founder of Logan’s Legacy 29 dog rescue, routinely receives distressing calls about stray animals needing help. However, one recent call brought her to tears. A Good Samaritan reported discovering not one, but three small dogs left abandoned on a derelict property in Compton, a sight so sad it tugged at her very soul. What struck Hall even more was the sight of these inseparable puppies, huddled closely together, displaying an unwavering loyalty while awaiting rescue.
Upon receiving the distressing news, Hall understood that rescuing these frightened souls would not be a simple task. The challenge of corralling even a single scared dog is daunting; how could she manage three in such a fragile condition? But deep down, she knew that these pups needed her, and she could not let them down. “It was beyond heartbreaking to see,” Hall shared on social media. “They are all so tiny.”
As fate would have it, a mechanical failure delayed her rescue mission for a few agonizing days. Yet, during this waiting period, Hall’s dear friend Mary Nakiso stepped in. Each evening, Nakiso visited the trio, bringing with her nourishing food that the puppies eagerly devoured while they coped with their dire situation. Through it all, their bond remained as strong as ever.
Finally, the day arrived when Hall could venture out to the abandoned property. What she witnessed was a testament to the power of companionship. “They were so scared, but they had each other,” Hall wrote, overwhelmed with emotion. “And boy, do they love each other.” With a heart full of hope, she began to enact her plan to rescue them. She successfully captured the smallest pup, whom she affectionately named Oscar, while Nakiso worked her magic to coax the second pup, a little girl named Jolene.
Ecstatic with their initial success, Hall and Nakiso turned their attention to the third pup, Ollie. Yet, this little boy proved to be more challenging, overwhelmed by fear and retreating to the safety of a nearby garage. Recognizing that pushing him would only exacerbate his fear, Hall and Nakiso took a step back, transporting Oscar and Jolene to Camino Pet Hospital, allowing the frightened Ollie a chance to calm down.
Later that evening, equipped with a humane dog trap, Hall returned to the property, placing it delicately near Ollie’s hiding spot. The next morning brought a rush of relief as Hall discovered Ollie nestled inside the trap, finally ready to be rescued. With a heart swelling with happiness, she drove him to the veterinary hospital, where he joyfully reunited with his siblings.
“They were all so scared. So cold, and so hungry,” Hall reflected. “But they were finally all safe. They had each other again.” Prior to heading off to a loving foster home, the trio received clean bills of health—an important first step in their emotional recovery. Under the attentive care of Hall’s close friend Genavie Ochoa, the puppies began to flourish. While timid Ollie remained cautious, his affectionate siblings, Jolene and Oscar, started to embrace their new environment more each day.
Despite the deep scars left by their traumatic experiences, their rescuers remained optimistic. “Ollie is so scared, but the other two are so sweet and love belly rubs,” Hall shared with The Dodo, exacerbating the emotional weight of their journey. “These poor babies went through so much.”
