In a moving tale of hope and resilience, a group of men in Baja California, Mexico, stumbled upon a heart-wrenching sight in October. As they walked near a deep canal, an unsettling high-pitched cry cut through the air, drawing their attention. Peering over the edge, they were met with an unimaginable scene — a Rottweiler lying helplessly on her side at the bottom, completely unable to move.
“It was like her last jolt of energy to just scream as much as she could to get attention,” Fatima Guevara, cofounder of The Cantu Foundation, recounted in a poignant video featured by The Dodo. In a desperate bid to save the dog, someone captured a video of her plight and shared it on social media, igniting the spark for her rescue.

Upon seeing the heart-wrenching footage, the dedicated staff members of The Cantu Foundation rushed to the scene. There, they uncovered the shocking circumstances that led to the dog’s dire situation. “They said a truck had dropped off a box right at the edge of the canal, where, if any type of movement happened, it was going to break and fall,” Guevara explained. The dog — soon to be named Flor — had been trapped inside the box. When she moved, the box gave way, sending her tumbling down into the dark depths below.
Flor was so frail and drained that she couldn’t muster the strength to lift her head, let alone attempt a climb out of her grim predicament. “This dog couldn’t even lift her head up,” Guevara said solemnly. “She couldn’t move.”

Rescue efforts were nothing short of heroic. A determined team worked together using ropes, carefully hoisting the exhausted pup out of the canal. Once safely above ground, they wasted no time in rushing her to a veterinary clinic for a comprehensive examination. To the amazement of everyone involved, it turned out that Flor didn’t suffer from any major injuries — she was simply worn out, a victim of neglect and hardship.
With compassionate care from The Cantu Foundation, Flor began her slow journey to recovery. Each passing day brought new signs of strength as she started to regain her ability to walk. As her health improved, so did her spirit, revealing the vibrant personality that had been suppressed for far too long. “She went from not being able to walk to just being the sassy girl that she is,” said Guevara, her voice filled with joy.

Once Flor had stabilized, the foundation facilitated her transfer to a loving foster home in San Diego, California. Here, she found a new friend in Kajsa, her enthusiastic foster mama, who has enjoyed every moment spent getting to know this remarkable dog. Flor’s playful side soon emerged, showcasing her love for chasing soccer balls and splashing in water from the hose. “She is a giant baby,” Kajsa exclaimed in her own heartfelt video for The Dodo. “She’s such a lover girl. All she wants is someone to throw the ball for her and to scratch her head.”
The journey for Flor is far from over. The Cantu Foundation is now tirelessly searching for a permanent home for this resilient Rottweiler. She embodies the spirit of love and trust, even after having every reason to harbor fear towards humans. “She has every reason not to trust humans, but she loves everyone that she meets,” Kajsa said, emphasizing Flor’s incredible capacity for love despite her tumultuous past.
It is up to a family to take a chance on this brave survivor, who will undoubtedly become a cherished member of anyone lucky enough to welcome her into their home.
