“They initially thought … that it was a bear,” reminisced Nikki Kell, the director and treasurer of Nala Sanctuary, recounting the couple’s frightened yet curious night. Determined to uncover the mystery, they set out to investigate, but the encroaching darkness robbed them of clarity. What creature stirred the unseen depths of the woods?
The dawn brought with it clarity and hope. With the sun’s soft rays illuminating the forest floor, the couple resumed their search, now with a burning desire to unveil the mystery. At long last, they stumbled upon the source of the unsettling growl— it was not a fearsome bear but a starving black Labrador and her eleven tiny newborn puppies.
“The puppies were scattered in several piles throughout the forest,” Kell shared, her voice heavy with empathy as she narrated the heartbreaking scene. Faced with the urgent need for assistance, the compassionate couple quickly reached out to local rescues, including Rocky’s Refuge Cat Rescue, who promptly relayed the heartfelt plea to Nala Sanctuary.
Time was of the essence, and soon, a team of rescuers arrived, their hearts pounding with determination. Armed with enticing treats, they gently coaxed the mama dog into their arms. As they drew her closer, it became painfully evident just how much she had suffered. “It was clear she had been on her own for a very long time,” Kell remarked, noting the injury to her hind leg and the tenderness in her eyes. Despite her trauma, the dog exuded a sweet demeanor that tugged at the heartstrings of everyone present.
With the pups and their mama now safe, the team transported them to a nearby warm barn, a sanctuary where they could rest and heal. The search for a loving foster home began promptly, leading them to Judy of Moonshine Kennel, who without hesitation offered to take in the entire family.
When they arrived at the kennel, the transformation began. Mama dog, whom they affectionately named Sarah, could finally let out a long-held sigh of relief. “She lay down with her babies, and you could see that she was relieved,” Kell described, her voice softening. “She fell asleep wagging her tail as her babies nursed.” In that moment of peace, a flicker of hope ignited—for Sarah and her pups were beginning to glimpse a brighter future.
Today, Sarah is thriving and devotedly caring for her eleven beautiful babies, each one a testament to resilience and love. “Without our help, they certainly would not have made it another day,” Kell reflected, the warmth of the story echoing in her words.
