What began as an ordinary autumn stroll through the quiet countryside of Târgu Frumos, Romania, quickly transformed into a life-altering moment for two tiny souls. As a woman wandered along her familiar rural path, surrounded by open fields and scattered remnants of neglect, something unusual caught her eye.
A worn cardboard box sat alone in the grass, damp from recent rains and partially sunken into the soft earth. At first glance, it seemed like just another instance of illegal dumping — a sad but common sight in the area. However, days later, after cold winds and steady rain swept through the fields, she passed by once more. This time, the box stirred.

Inside were two fragile puppies, their fur matted and damp, their small bodies trembling as they struggled to crawl over the edge. They were barely more than babies, vulnerable and exposed to the biting cold. The heartbreaking sight compelled her to act immediately.
The woman contacted ROLDA UK, a compassionate organization devoted to rescuing and rehoming Romanian street dogs, knowing that these puppies stood little chance of survival without intervention. Rescuers arrived promptly, gently lifting the tiny sisters from their makeshift prison. Their little paws were icy, and their bodies felt thin beneath their soaked fur.

They were weak but still clung to each other for comfort. ‘They were extremely small, cold and fragile,’ shared ROLDA UK founder Dana Costin. ‘Once placed indoors, wrapped in warmth and given food, they began to settle. They were exhausted rather than outwardly anxious. Being placed in a quiet room alongside gentle cats helped them calm down and feel secure.’
Safe at last, the puppies were given names that reflected their delicate spirits: Letti and Lisette. The first hours were all about warmth and nurturing. Soft blankets replaced the wet cardboard; a heated room replaced the open field. For the first time in days, perhaps even longer, their tiny bodies could finally relax.

They slept soundly, pressed tightly together, drawing strength from one another. Even in the worst conditions, they had clung fiercely to each other. Veterinarians carefully examined them, and despite their rough beginnings, they were fighters. With proper nutrition, gentle care, and medical support, their energy gradually returned. Their eyes sparkled with life; their tails started to wag.
As they regained strength, Letti and Lisette were moved to a facility where other recovering dogs awaited new homes. There, they discovered the joy of play, toys, and the simple elation of running across safe ground. Yet, no matter how many new friends they made, they always circled back to each other.
‘They are so closely bonded,’ Costin noted. ‘They really do adore each other.’ Staff observed how Letti would check on Lisette if she wandered too far, and how Lisette would curl up beside her sister at every nap. Their bond, forged in hardship, only grew stronger in safety.
Fortunately, they were never faced with the prospect of separation. A family, touched by their story, recognized that these sisters belonged together. They opened their home to both puppies, ensuring they would continue side by side for the entirety of their lives.
Now, instead of shivering in a damp box, Letti and Lisette awaken in a warm home filled with soft beds and loving hands. They have stability. They have safety. Most importantly, they have each other.
Their journey from abandonment to belonging stands as a quiet testimony to the profound impact of compassion. What began as a forgotten box in a field blossomed into the start of a beautiful new chapter in their lives.
