On a foggy winter night in Parkville, Missouri, Emily Orr found herself driving slowly through the darkness, the chill of December wrapping around her like a heavy blanket. With the clock almost striking 9 p.m., the streets should have been deserted, yet a faint sound echoed from the nearby dog park—an unsettling cry that pierced through the stillness.
Compelled by an instinctual feeling that something was amiss, Emily pressed forward despite the treacherous driving conditions. As she cautiously approached the dog park, her heart narrowed when that haunting sound was soon joined by the sight of a solitary figure—an abandoned dog gazing back at her with longing eyes.

“I pulled up to the dog park and saw a dog. I was shocked,” Emily recounted later, the disbelief still fresh in her voice. “I couldn’t believe somebody actually left their dog!” With her young daughter seated in the back, she felt a wave of hesitation wash over her. Picking up the phone, she called the non-emergency police line, as well as her mom, hoping they could lend a hand.
While waiting, Emily drove circles around the park, her heart breaking as the abandoned pup raced along the fence, desperate for companionship. “The dog followed my car, crying and whining,” she said, the memory of those sorrowful sounds still tugging at her heart. It was clear that both of them were terrified of the darkness surrounding them, yearning for comfort.

Just then, her mom and the police arrived, whereupon they quickly approached the fence. The frightened dog, who would later be named Emilia, lit up at the sight of them. “She came to us immediately, unbelievably excited! She was wagging her tail,” Emily described with a smile. The moment was a whirlwind of relief and joy, as Emilia eagerly jumped into her mom’s waiting car and practically buried her head in the treats offered.
But beneath that jubilant exterior lay the haunting truth of her situation. Emilia was painfully thin, her frail body a stark reminder of her ordeal. Emily suspected that someone had cruelly abandoned her just after sunset, leaving her to face the bitter cold of the night alone. “She would have suffered and possibly died without shelter,” Emily reflected, gratitude flooding her for the chance they were given to rescue the sweet pup.

For the night, Emilia was taken into Emily’s mom’s home, though her anxious energy kept everyone awake. To mitigate this chaos, they decided to get her a kennel, and to their delight, Emilia adapted immediately. “It became evident that this dog was both kennel trained and house trained,” Emily noted, marveling at how gentle and loving Emilia had turned out to be.
As days passed, the timid spirit of Emilia began to shine through. She discovered joy in toys, particularly a plush Lamb Chop, and befriended Emily’s mom’s elder cats, making strides toward acceptance and playfulness. Yet, everything changed one fateful night, highlighting just how special Emilia truly was. Emily’s mom faced a sudden medical emergency—the rupture of her appendix.
In the grips of sharp pain and uncertainty, Emilia remained steadfast by her side, laying her head gently against her mom’s abdomen, offering warmth and unwavering support during an unthinkable moment. “She knew,” said Emily softly, realizing the bond they had formed extended far beyond mere companionship.
Though circumstances led Emily’s mom to the difficult decision not to keep Emilia, the love they shared was undeniable, and they vowed to find her a wonderful home. Teaming up with Friends of Parkville Animal Shelter, they found a loving foster family where Emilia is thriving.
As Emilia settles into her new routine, her vibrant spirit lights up her days, though she still awaits a forever family to call her own. Life could have taken such a different turn that cold winter night, but thanks to Emily’s instincts, this once-abandoned dog now knows the warmth of love and safety.
“I hope she finds her forever home,” Emily said, her voice filled with hope for Emilia’s future, as she continued to wish for the best for the beloved pup.
