The photo stopped Sheri Hogue in her tracks, capturing her attention like a spell. There was something in the dog’s eyes that echoed a quiet sadness, interwoven with a gentle spirit that felt strangely familiar. It was a look she had seen before, in a beloved dog who had once meant the world to her, igniting a cascade of memories and a deep yearning in her heart.

Sheri and her husband, Dave, had always embraced Labrador retrievers, opening their home to numerous dogs in need of warmth and safety. Their residence in Memphis, Tennessee had become a sanctuary for these precious souls, offering them a new lease on life. Feeling a strong pull towards this frightened Labrador, Sheri instinctively knew this dog might soon be a part of their family.

In July 2024, an unexpected message arrived that would forever alter their lives. Kathy Martin, president of Lucky Lab Rescue and Adoption, reached out with a heartfelt request – could the Hogues foster a stray dog taken to a shelter in Kentucky? The note accompanied the plea: ‘She reminds me so much of your Bella.’ Bella, the beloved companion the Hogues had lost to cancer more than a decade ago, had left an unbearable ache in their hearts. ‘She was our soul dog,’ Sheri recalled wistfully. ‘We always wished we could find another dog just like her.’

With just one glance at the photo of the new dog, the pair made an immediate decision. They agreed to foster the dog and arranged to meet the transport volunteers from Kentucky. When the moment finally arrived and they met the terrified Labrador, her emotional state told a heartbreaking story. Her body was tense, her eyes reflected the burden of trauma and neglect. ‘She was so beaten down and just an emotional wreck,’ Sheri described. ‘She was so, so sad.’

They named her Honey, and with gentle patience, love, and a routine filled with kindness, a transformation began. The fear that clouded her eyes slowly faded, and soon after, her true personality began to emerge. ‘Over time, she began to smile,’ Sheri shared, the joy evident in her voice. It soon became clear – Honey was no longer just a foster dog; she was family. The Hogues officially adopted her, witnessing her evolve into a joyful, affectionate companion.

Months passed, and in April 2025, as the moon hung high in the night sky, Sheri encountered another post from Lucky Lab Rescue—a call for someone to foster a fragile yellow Labrador dealing with multiple medical issues. Drawn to the uneasy fragility of the small dog in the photos, Sheri felt an undeniable urge to help. ‘It was about 2:30 a.m., and I woke up my husband and said, ‘I think I found a dog,’’ she recalled, excitement blended with urgency.

By chance, this Labrador, too, had been found as a stray in Kentucky. Without hesitation, the Hogues drove to Indiana to meet the transport team and welcomed the little dog into their hearts on Easter Sunday. Remarkably, as soon as she stepped into their home, an amazing connection sparked. ‘She and Honey bonded immediately,’ Sheri said, smiling. Their warm greeting, filled with curiosity and affection, felt like a reunion between two ancient friends.

The Hogues named the newcomer Poppy and immediately delved into addressing her health challenges with their veterinarian. Under the care and love of the Hogues, Poppy began to flourish, her energy and confidence rejuvenating day by day. In nothing short of a beautiful miracle, the two dogs began to fit together seamlessly—cuddling side by side and moving in perfect harmony throughout their home.

As their bond deepened, Sheri and Dave often mused about the dogs’ origins. Both dogs found wandering in Kentucky: could they share a deeper connection? Their curiosity led them to explore dog DNA testing for the pair. They simply wanted to discover if the dogs might have distant family ties.

When the test results arrived, the Hogues opened the email with a mix of hope and anticipation. A stunning revelation waited within; Honey and Poppy were not just linked by circumstances—they were sisters. ‘We were blown away,’ Sheri exclaimed, the weight of this discovery filling their hearts with wonder.

In this serendipitous twist of fate, two former strays had endured their own arduous journeys, only to find their way back to one another in the Hogues’ loving home. Today, Honey and Poppy spend their days together, napping side by side, exploring the world as confidantes, and leaning into the love their humans shower upon them. The bond they share is undeniable and profound.

‘It fills our hearts with joy to restore both of these dogs to health and to provide them with a safe, loving home,’ Sheri said, a smile illuminating her face. ‘Knowing they are long-lost siblings who overcame such terrible circumstances to reunite makes our hearts smile so big.’
