Such was the case for Nick Pierzchalsk, a medevac pilot stationed in Iraq, who met a friendly stray Shepherd mix during his service. The one-year-old pup approached Nick and engaged in playful interactions, leading to an instant bond. Nick and his crew affectionately named her Airys, a name symbolizing hope and positivity for their overseas deployment.
Airys quickly became a cherished member of the team, receiving daily care, food, and shelter. The crew even constructed a kennel for her in their hangar, ensuring she had a safe space. As Nick’s time in Iraq drew to a close, his companions encouraged him to bring Airys back to the United States and provide her with a loving home. Recognizing the harsh desert environment was not suitable for her, Nick couldn’t bear to leave her behind. He had fallen deeply in love with Airys and wanted to give her a life filled with lush green grass and the joy of chasing squirrels.
Through the assistance of SPCA International, Nick was able to fulfill his heartfelt ambition. Airys made the long journey to the United States, with their heartwarming reunion captured live by Fox 13 News at Tampa International Airport.
