The winter season in St. Louis, Missouri, is known for its severe cold, with temperatures often falling into the single digits. This climate poses significant risks for stray animals.

The Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) organization is dedicated to aiding these animals. Their team works diligently throughout the city to locate and assist dogs suffering in the cold, particularly during the frigid month of January.

On one of their missions, they encountered an abandoned property. A closer examination revealed a dog in dire need of help, left behind in the backyard.

Rescue Operation Unfolds

While on a routine search, the SRSL team approached what they thought was an empty property, only to find a dog, evidently a former pet, abandoned and chained to a doghouse with frozen water inside.

The dog was found shivering in the cold, highlighting the cruelty of his abandonment. Stray Rescue of St. Louis shared on Facebook the heart-wrenching conditions and the immediate emotional impact of the scene.

Donna Lochmann, a dedicated rescuer with SRSL, was deeply moved by the dog’s plight. The organization’s message on social media conveyed a promise of freedom and care to the abandoned dog.

Upon seeing the rescuers, the dog, named Eskimo Joe, showed unmistakable signs of recognition and relief. He warmly greeted Lochmann, pressing against her as they freed him from his chain.

Eskimo Joe’s Journey to Safety

After his rescue, Eskimo Joe was transported in a warm vehicle, where he enjoyed the comfort of heated seats, a stark contrast to his previous conditions.

Subsequent to his rescue, Eskimo Joe was thoroughly examined by a veterinary team and, despite testing positive for heartworm, was found to be in a condition that was treatable with proper medication.

Eskimo Joe’s kind demeanor quickly endeared him to the rescue team, leading to his placement in a loving foster home.

His foster caregiver described him as an exceptionally gentle and well-mannered dog, highlighting his adaptability and affectionate nature.

Eskimo Joe’s transformation from his time behind the abandoned house to his current state in a nurturing environment is remarkable. He continues to seek a permanent home while enjoying the love and care of his foster family.

His foster mother shared that Eskimo Joe is curious and enjoys exploring his surroundings, emphasizing his readiness for a forever home that can provide him with the love and care he deserves.
