In the world of heroes, not all wear capes. Some heroes come in the form of furry, barking companions who work alongside our human heroes in blue. Meet Sampson, a German Shepherd K9 officer who dedicated over 10 years to the force before his recent passing.

Sampson’s journey began as a pup in training when Deputy Police Chief Michelle Small welcomed him into the Bath Police Department. Bred from an exceptional line of German Shepherds from the Netherlands, Sampson quickly proved his intelligence and heroism, even saving Small’s life on multiple occasions.

For 11 years, Small and Sampson were inseparable. They formed an unbreakable bond, with Sampson serving as her loyal and trusted partner. Beyond his duties as a police dog, Sampson touched the community’s hearts by participating in local events, visiting senior centers, and bringing joy to children. He had a gentle and caring nature, making him especially adept at finding missing individuals with autism or dementia.

While off duty, Sampson enjoyed the simple pleasures of being a dog—playing fetch, spending time with his fellow German Shepherd sibling, and indulging in puppuccinos. Unfortunately, Sampson’s remarkable career came to an end when he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Despite his valiant fight, his pain became too much to bear, and Small made the difficult decision to let him go.

In May, Sampson was given a heartfelt farewell, with police and fire personnel from Bath, Sagadahoc County SO, Topsham, Brunswick, Lisbon, and South Portland escorting him from Bath to Brunswick. Sampson’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him, forever grateful for his service and the lasting impact he made.

While Sampson’s journey may have come to an end, his memory will never fade. He was a true hero—a K9 officer who touched lives, protected his community, and will be remembered as an unforgettable companion.
