Older dogs often face neglect in shelters, particularly those with health issues, as they are frequently overlooked in favor of younger, healthier puppies.
This narrative changed for one senior golden retriever named Mickey, who found himself needing a new home after his owner passed away. The Golden Retriever Rescue of Southwest Florida highlighted Mickey’s plight in November, sharing that the 13-year-old dog was left homeless due to his owner’s death from a prolonged illness.
The rescue group urgently sought a foster or permanent home for Mickey, noting his partial blindness and deafness and describing him as extremely sweet. Despite Mickey’s health challenges, including a benign mass that required removal and infections in his skin and eyes, a veterinarian recommended that he be rescued rather than euthanized.
Marianne, who had recently lost her two dogs, Sophie and Scout, and was grieving their loss, had joined a waitlist to adopt a younger dog or puppy. Initially, she was hesitant to adopt a senior dog but decided to foster Mickey temporarily after learning about his situation.
Mickey quickly adapted to his new foster home, enjoying comfortable beds and nutritious food. His health improved, and his affectionate nature won Marianne’s heart. The bond they formed convinced her to adopt him permanently, changing her initial plans.
In a joyful twist, Marianne not only welcomed Mickey into her life permanently but also adopted the puppy she had been waiting for, giving Mickey a new companion.
