Meet Nellie, an adorable Cocker Spaniel puppy whose life took a surprising turn when she was abandoned by a breeder due to her deafness and blindness. Despite the challenges she faced, Nellie’s story is one of resilience, love, and hope. Thanks to the compassionate team at Secondhand Hounds, a foster-based animal rescue in Minnetonka, MN, Nellie found a foster family that opened their hearts and home to her, showering her with affection and care.
Nellie’s unique condition required extra-special care and attention. As a “Fighter Fund Foster,” she needed dedicated vetting and extended stay with a foster family. Fortunately, she was placed with a loving family that had a history of fostering and rescuing animals. The moment they laid eyes on Nellie, they knew she was destined to become an integral part of their family.
Being blind and deaf, Nellie faced the challenge of navigating her new surroundings. Her foster family puppy-proofed their home to ensure she could move around with ease. Despite initial concerns about her interactions with other dogs, Nellie quickly acclimated and found joy in playful interactions with her furry siblings.
Nellie’s foster family was captivated by her sweet and affectionate nature. Though she couldn’t hear or see, Nellie had her unique way of communicating, like placing her mouth close to theirs when they met. This endearing gesture became her special greeting, leaving no doubt that she was meant to be loved and cherished.
While Nellie couldn’t see or hear, it didn’t stop her from exploring and enjoying life. Her foster family discovered her love for digging, like any other dog, and her keen ability to uncover hidden treasures left behind by previous homeowners. Despite her limitations, Nellie’s confidence and tenacity shone through.
As much as Nellie’s foster family adored her, they were committed to finding her a forever home within Minnesota. The adoption process involved multiple meets, greets, and visits to ensure she found the perfect match. However, with the strong bond they shared, it seemed like Nellie might have already found her forever family.
In addition to Nellie, the family had five other dogs, including Lily, a hospice foster with an aggressive form of cancer. Remarkably, Nellie and Lily formed a beautiful bond, with Nellie finding comfort in sleeping on her mom’s chest, feeling the reassuring heartbeat. Nellie may be unable to see or hear, but she radiates love with every beat of her heart, reminding us of the precious nature of unconditional love.
Nellie’s journey exemplifies strength, resilience, and the transformative power of love. Despite her challenging start, she blossomed into a cherished and affectionate member of her foster family. As she continues to bring joy and love to their lives, one thing is clear – Nellie’s spirit and unwavering affection know no bounds.
