Numerous stray and neglected dogs endure distress due to lack of grooming, resulting in tangled and matted fur. However, a simple haircut can make a world of difference.

This was recently demonstrated when a severely neglected dog, encased in thick, matted fur, underwent a transformative makeover, offering him a renewed lease on life.

On July 16, the South Plains SPCA posted about the “worst case of dog neglect” they had ever encountered. A 6-year-old dog was found in deplorable condition, with severely matted fur and other health issues.

“The dog has rotten skin spots, hair matted to the skin so bad it is ingrown into the skin, the nails are 2 inches long,” reported the SPCA. Kim Moyers, president of the South Plains SPCA, mentioned, “His hair growth was about five years of matting. It’s just awful that he was probably seen in different places and overlooked. I don’t see how he hasn’t been seen roaming in the condition he was. I’ve never seen anything like him. It was shocking.”

Taking him in, the South Plains SPCA named him Matt, after his matted fur. Despite the dire condition, they were determined to rehabilitate him and provide a second chance.

Matt, in severe pain during the grooming process, had to be sedated. The groomers cut through a collar and leash embedded in his hair, removing an astonishing three pounds of fur accumulated over five years of neglect.

“There were thousands of goathead stickers, sticks, grass, and even beetles matted in his fur. He has severe bruises on his body from his fur being tight on his skin,” the SPCA reported. Although Matt was anemic and required medication, he tested negative for heartworm and tick disease.

Despite the challenges ahead, including necessary dental work, Matt’s life underwent a significant positive change after the removal of the matted fur. Described as the “most gorgeous-looking dog,” Matt’s newfound joy and happiness were evident in his first walk without the burden of heavy fur in years.

Currently under the care of foster parent Tori Houston, Matt will be put up for adoption once he completes his recovery. While it is heartbreaking that Matt endured neglect for so long, his remarkable transformation is a testament to the power of care and compassion.
