In the relentless heat of a California summer, three small dogs found a temporary haven inside an old, deflated tire under a freeway overpass. Desperate and dehydrated, they clung to life in this makeshift shelter until a chance encounter changed their fate.
A lost man, having taken a wrong turn, stumbled upon a white Terrier lying atop a trash heap near the tire. Realizing the dogs’ dire situation, he contacted Faith Easdale from Dream Fetchers: Project Rescue, who is well-versed in rescuing abandoned pets from such harsh environments. “It’s an everyday occurrence,” Faith commented, highlighting the frequent abandonment of pets in remote and desolate areas.
Faith quickly called on Cassandra Aldridge, a local rescuer, to assess the situation. When Cassandra arrived, she found three dogs peeking out from the tire, too weak and dehydrated to move. Acting swiftly, she loaded the tire, with the dogs still inside, into her car to provide them with immediate relief from the oppressive heat.
As the air conditioning in the car cooled the pups, Faith arrived to assist. Together, they gently coaxed the dogs out of their tire shelter, offering them water, which they gratefully drank. “They were so lethargic that they didn’t even want to run,” Faith recounted to The Dodo. Relieved, she and Cassandra settled the dogs into a crate, where they found comfort in each other’s presence.
The rescuers whimsically named the trio Michelin, Pirelli, and Kumho after tire brands, signifying the start of their new journey towards recovery. Despite suffering from flea and tick infestations and damaged skin, the dogs quickly began to thrive under the care they received. The sight of the white dog protectively placing her paw over another pup touched the hearts of their saviors.
Now, safely recovering at a veterinary hospital, these dogs look forward to a future far removed from the harsh conditions they once endured.
