A hairless animal rescued from the cold might seem like a cat at first, but it’s actually much more surprising.
For many animals, fur is vital as it offers essential protection against the cold and helps in identification. Sometimes, animals without fur can be nearly unrecognizable.
Recently, a creature resembling a hairless cat was rescued, but it turned out to be something far more unusual. Keep reading to discover more about this unique animal and its remarkable story of survival.
Last month, Hope for Wildlife, a nonprofit conservation group in Nova Scotia, took in a very unusual animal. A couple from West Arichat found it shivering in their backyard, initially mistaking it for a Sphynx cat. However, it was a completely hairless raccoon!

The lack of fur makes it difficult to identify this raccoon, which suffers from severe alopecia, leaving only a few tufts of fur on its snout, ankles, and feet. Hope Swinimer, the director of Hope for Wildlife, noted that while they have seen bald raccoons before, none were as extreme as this case.
The raccoon, a female, has been named Rufus, inspired by the naked mole rat character from the cartoon “Kim Possible.” Despite a thorough examination, the rescue team has yet to determine the exact cause of her hair loss, though autoimmune issues have been suggested, with common causes like parasites, mange, and fungal infections already ruled out.
Remarkably, Rufus managed to survive the harsh winter without fur, avoiding frostbite or worse conditions, which amazed the rescuers. She displayed a feisty personality, which they believe played a crucial role in her survival.

Rufus was in a dire state upon her arrival at the shelter, but she showed significant improvement after a few hours, driven by hunger. Given her condition, she may become a permanent resident at the shelter, where a specialized habitat awaits her, complete with a warm crawl space and amenities like hammocks and nesting boxes.
It’s astounding to see a hairless raccoon surviving in the wild for so long, and it’s fortunate that she is now receiving proper care.
