In a heartwarming display of compassion and bravery, officers from the New York Police Department (NYPD) recently rescued a blind border collie named Sparky from the icy waters of Baisley Pond in South Jamaica, Queens. The 8-year-old canine had a frightening Halloween when he found himself trapped in the frigid pond.
Upon receiving a 911 call, NYPD officers Branden Williams and Marc Esposito, from the 113th precinct, rushed to the scene, as reported by WABC. Despite waiting initially for additional assistance, the officers, moved by Sparky’s distress cries, decided not to waste any time.

Officer Esposito revealed to CBS News, “It was honestly really sad to hear. We called our Emergency Service Unit. They said they were coming, but just by listening to the dog, we knew we had to do something.”
The rescue, documented in gripping bodycam footage shared on Twitter, showcased the officers’ determination to reach the struggling canine in the uneven, chest-high waters. Officer Esposito described the challenging conditions, explaining, “It was shallow, but it was so uneven so you’d take a step, and then another step, and that next step you just sank all the way down until you’re chest high, neck high, so it was a bit of a struggle to get to the dog.”

Upon reaching Sparky, the officers discovered his blindness and promptly brought him back to dry land. The NYPD officers’ heroics did not end there; they transported Sparky to the precinct, where Animal Care and Control took charge. Vets provided treatment for hypothermia, and the resilient collie was eventually reunited with his owners, who had reported him missing the day before. Currently, Sparky is recuperating comfortably at home.
The officers expressed their satisfaction at being able to assist a pet in need. Officer Esposito conveyed to WABC, “In the moment you think, if this was my dog, I wish somebody would help. It’s a really good feeling knowing that we saved the dog and it got reunited with its family.”

Officer Williams, speaking to CBS News, shared the pride he felt, stating, “Definitely proud of what we did, and definitely would do it again.”
This heartening rescue serves as a reminder of the selflessness within our communities and the willingness of individuals, even in the face of adversity, to go above and beyond to ensure the safety and well-being of both humans and their animal companions. Let’s celebrate these NYPD officers for their commendable actions in saving Sparky. Share this uplifting story to spread the warmth and gratitude!
