All dogs in shelters hope to be adopted into a loving home, but some are more fortunate than others. One such dog is Ginny, a 5-year-old female pit bull mix who spent over 1,000 days at the Lexington Humane Society. After arriving as a stray in December 2019, Ginny was put up for adoption but struggled to find the perfect match.

Ginny needed a home without children or other animals, which limited her potential adopters, and the shelter indicated that her breed may have also been a factor. Despite the challenges, Ginny never gave up hope. According to the shelter’s Facebook post, “Not many can tolerate life in a shelter for the amount of time that she has, but Ginny always prevailed, no matter what.” Ginny received leash training, crate training, and basic obedience during her time at the shelter.

Finally, after nearly three years, Ginny’s dream came true: she was adopted! The Lexington Humane Society staff were overjoyed to see one of their longest residents finally find a home and decided to throw a special party for Ginny and her new owner. The party featured balloons, cake, treats, and lots of parting gifts for Ginny. Shelter staff members lined up and applauded as Ginny left the shelter for the final time.

The shelter shared Ginny’s story on Facebook, expressing gratitude for the love, care, and support they were able to provide her during her stay. They also thanked Ginny’s new dad for choosing adoption as the best option to help an animal in need. In another post, they shared a photo of Ginny’s empty kennel, which she will never have to call home again.

We are thrilled that Ginny has finally found her forever home after such a long wait. Her story is a reminder that all shelter dogs deserve a chance at a loving home, no matter how long it takes. Congratulations, Ginny! Enjoy your new home!
