Amid the bustling streets of Houston, Texas, where stray dogs scavenge for morsels of food and hope, a pup named Tanner once roamed. His days were filled with longing, a wish that someone would see him and offer him the love and shelter he so desperately yearned for.
In the summer of 2023, Tanner’s prayers were answered when a kind soul rescued him and brought him to a local shelter. Little did they know, they had welcomed a truly special companion into their midst.
From Lonely Stray to Euthanasia List
With every passing day, Tanner’s heart ached for a forever family. Three weeks slipped by, and no one came forward to make him their own. Trapped in an overcrowded shelter, Tanner’s name found its way onto the dreaded euthanasia list.
Enter Madeline Garvis Smith, a passionate dog advocate, who visited Tanner. Their encounter was magical; Tanner wrapped his paws around her, offering a heartwarming hug that melted her heart. She couldn’t bear to see this affectionate pup meet an untimely end.
Describing her experience, Garvis Smith shared, “He was pure love; almost starved for attention. Putting him back in his kennel was the hardest part because I knew he was just so lonely.”
Tanner’s Chance at Life
Madeline Garvis Smith took to her Instagram account on August 26th, 2023, to share Tanner’s story. She wanted the world to know that this charming “love bug” only needed one thing: a chance.
Tanner had an uncanny knack for snuggling with volunteers, nestling into their laps, and seeking love with every gaze. Despite being a one-year-old pup, he reveled in being cradled like a baby.
Saving Tanner
Moved by Tanner’s plight, Garvis Smith urgently sought a local foster home for him. Her plea caught the attention of Kari, a foster mom ready to open her heart and home to Tanner.
As Tanner bid his shelter friends farewell with gentle hugs, it was as if he wished to thank them for their care and affection. When he ventured outside with Kari, his tail wagged with joy – he was happy.
Tanner’s new journey began when he hopped into Kari’s car, and she couldn’t help but shower him with kisses. Both thrilled and relieved, she knew she’d saved a precious life.
In his new foster home, Tanner initially displayed a touch of shyness. However, the loving environment soon worked its magic. He warmed up to his foster family and began asking for pets, basking in the affection they lavished upon him.
A Lifetime of Love
Tanner’s adventure continues as he prepares to move to the Animal Rescue Network of New England in New Hampshire. There, he’ll await his forever family, a family who will be blessed with his loving hugs each day.
Tanner’s tale is a testament to the power of compassion and community, reminding us that every shelter dog, no matter their past, deserves a chance to love and be loved.
