Gumby, a hound mix, was brought to the Charleston Animal Society (CAS) as a stray in September 2014. Over the next year, he was adopted out 11 times but kept escaping and returning to the shelter. The staff realized Gumby was trying to tell them something – the shelter was his forever home.

Known for his Houdini-like escaping skills, Gumby’s first adoption only lasted 3 days before he returned to CAS. His second adoption lasted 6 days. Despite warnings about his escaping, the third adopter was determined. But Gumby was brought back to CAS 4 more times.

In March 2015, Gumby found his fourth family. After 4 months with no escapes, he returned as a stray in July. Adopted for a fifth time in August, he ended up at a sister shelter 30 miles away before being brought back.

After being returned by his sixth adopter, CAS gave it one more try in December 2015. But the adopter said Gumby escaped three times in one month, even busting through a screen door!

CAS finally realized Gumby wanted to stay at the shelter. He loved the attention from staff and was comfortable there. Gumby had a knack for comforting anxious dogs, so part of him wanted to stay for his important work.

Although CAS stopped trying to adopt out Gumby, they never gave up on him. The shelter became his forever home where he found his purpose. Gumby officially joined the staff as General Manager, helping with dog behavior demos and playing with other pups.

Additionally, Gumby’s blood was found to have healing properties. He now donates blood to help kittens with eye infections. Just another way this special dog contributes at CAS.

Gumby tried telling his adoption families through his escapes that the shelter was his true home. The Charleston Animal Society is thrilled Gumby has found where he belongs. His perseverance shows that home is where you feel most comfortable, loved and needed.
