When Sugar Mama, a senior Pit Bull, found herself in a new foster home, her future looked uncertain. With a sizeable belly and well past her prime, the chances of her unborn puppies surviving were slim. Yet, Briana, her dedicated foster parent, embarked on an incredible journey with Sugar Mama, leading to an astonishing outcome for the whole family.
From the outset, it was clear that Sugar Mama wasn’t feeling her best. She wasn’t eating or drinking, raising concerns about her ability to navigate through labor. Determined to support her, Briana stayed by her side, providing comfort as Sugar Mama went into labor, delivering three puppies – fittingly named Cane, Cookie, and Cube – each with their own unique challenges.
Cane, the largest, arrived without complications. However, Cookie needed extra help to start breathing as she initially seemed stillborn. Cube faced the most struggle, gasping for air for a full hour before stabilizing. Through every hurdle, Briana provided unwavering care for both the mother and her newborns.
In the first 24 hours, Briana diligently tended to Sugar Mama’s needs, milking her nipples hourly to share the milk among the three puppies. By day two, concerns grew as Sugar Mama produced insufficient milk and still wasn’t eating or drinking. On the fourth day, the vet confirmed she had no milk and was too unwell to care for her pups.
Determined to ensure the puppies thrived, Briana took on the task of bottle-feeding them. For the next four weeks, she slept on the couch with the puppies nearby, waking up every two hours to feed them and tend to their needs. Under Briana’s care, the puppies flourished, gaining weight and showing no signs of their earlier struggles.
As the puppies grew, a remarkable transformation took place. Sugar Mama began to regain her strength. Within a day of being separated from her puppies, she resumed normal dog behavior – eating, drinking, and gaining weight. Her health improved visibly, a testament to her resilience.
Bruce (formerly Cane) and Cookie found loving homes, while Cube continued his search. Briana remains confident that Cube will soon find his forever family, with numerous applications pouring in.
Sugar Mama’s story is nothing short of incredible. Vets had anticipated the loss of all her pups due to her advanced age. However, these resilient babies now thrive, thanks to a determined mother and a compassionate human who opened her heart and home to a doggy family in need.
