It’s always heart-wrenching when dogs are surrendered to shelters by their owners. These dogs are uprooted from the only home they’ve ever known, left confused and distressed in an unfamiliar environment without their familiar family.
A recent video highlights this heartbreaking reality, showing a dog surrendered by his family after two years. Despite the sorrow, there remains a glimmer of hope.
Last month, a dog named Carlton was surrendered to the Special Pals animal shelter in Houston, Texas, by the family he had lived with for two years.
Shelter director Becky French posted a TikTok video of the two-year-old mixed breed, capturing Carlton’s heartbreak and confusion on his first day at the shelter.
“He doesn’t understand where his person went,” Becky wrote. “He kept returning to the spot his owner sat with him before leaving.”
The video also shows Carlton refusing treats and avoiding eye contact with the staff. “He is scared. Confused,” Becky wrote. “This is what your dog goes through when they go back to a shelter.”
Despite the initial heartbreak, Becky mentioned that they managed to “get some happy moments” from Carlton and expressed hope that he would find a new forever home soon.

The transition is always tough, but there are signs that Carlton, now called “Posty,” is adjusting well to shelter life. In a follow-up video, Becky revealed that Posty is “obsessed with balls,” showing him happily playing with the shelter staff.
Despite the heartbreak he initially experienced, Posty has made significant progress and is now described as “a happy boy.”
