Rescue tales often tug at our heartstrings, especially when they involve dogs nearing the end of their journey. Such is the case with Sophiane and Hippo, whose poignant story resonates deeply.
Despite being ailing and homeless, Sophiane Nacer was determined to grant Hippo the utmost comfort in his final days. She vowed to ensure that Hippo, an elderly stray covered in tumors, would only feel love as he crossed the Rainbow Bridge.
“Even if just for a day,” remarked Sophiane, the 19-year-old founder of Cayleb’s Kindred Senior Dog Rescue, “Hippo was going to have the best last day ever.”
Hippo spent five days at the shelter before Sophiane adopted him. His body was tender to the touch, a testament to the pain he endured. Doubts lingered if he could still feel anything amidst his suffering, until Sophiane noticed his tail wagging. Despite his illness, Hippo clung to hope, yearning for moments of joy and affection.
Sophiane treated Hippo to a special outing, taking him to Starbucks for a Puppuccino—a delightful secret menu item for dogs. The following day, they visited a dog park where Hippo reveled in the simple joys of play. But then, he had something important to convey to Sophiane.
Though weary and in pain, the old dog shared news with his newfound friend: it was time to bid farewell. Grateful for the time spent with Sophiane, Hippo expressed his fatigue and discomfort. Following their trip to the park, Sophiane arranged for a Veterinary Euthanasia Specialist to visit their home.
For his final meal, Hippo enjoyed roasted chicken laced with sedatives, peacefully drifting into eternal sleep beside Sophiane.
