PERRIS, Calif. – In a distressing event, a dog in Perris was rushed to the hospital after being stung multiple times by a swarm of bees. The incident occurred when Tommy Baker, the dog’s owner, discovered a bee colony residing in his yard’s fence while considering fence replacement. Despite reaching out to several bee removal companies, he received no response. Faced with no alternative, Baker attempted to remove the hive himself on Tuesday, inadvertently angering the bees.
To Baker’s surprise, the hive was larger than expected, and the bees were noticeably agitated. Concerned for his safety, Baker stepped away, hoping the bees would calm down. Unfortunately, the bees migrated to Baker’s neighbors’ yard and viciously attacked their dog, Chance, a 2-year-old Rotweilier-pit bull mix. The bees swarmed Chance, inflicting approximately 700 stings on one side of his body.
Witnessing the swarm, Baker’s wife swiftly intervened, bringing Chance into their garage and eliminating the remaining bees. However, Chance’s condition deteriorated on Saturday, prompting his owner, Brian Engen, to rush him to the emergency animal hospital. Engen expressed his deep concern and shared the emotional toll the situation has taken on their family. Chance’s health remains critical, with crucial blood transfusions planned within the next 24 hours to boost his platelet counts.
The community has rallied behind Chance, as a GoFundMe campaign has already raised nearly $6,000 to support his medical expenses. Bee experts have highlighted that this time of year is particularly active for bees, especially after the abundant rainfall California experienced in the spring. They advise individuals to refrain from swatting at bees and, if possible, hold their breath when encountering a swarm to minimize the risk of being stung.
