Meet Chupey — a six-year-old rescue dog with spiky ears, wide-set eyes, thin hair, and a signature underbite that highlights his quirky, charming smile.
He may not look like your average pup, but to his mom Kaley — and the hundreds of thousands who follow him on TikTok and Instagram — Chupey is nothing short of perfect.
“He was born that way,” Kaley, who lives in Georgia, told Newsweek.
When he was a puppy, Chupey was nearly named Ed, after the goofy hyena in The Lion King. But as his vibrant personality emerged, it became clear he needed a name as unique as he is.
Chupey’s story begins with uncertainty, but it’s rooted in love and rescue.
“I was heavily involved in dog rescue at the time,” Kaley explained. “A couple I had worked with before contacted me about a new litter. One puppy, they said, was very different and wasn’t growing like the others.”
She agreed to help — but only if they allowed her to spay the mother dog. They agreed, and Chupey found his forever home.
From the start, Chupey’s appearance sparked curiosity — even among scientists.
“We sequenced his DNA and found a partial trisomy on chromosome six,” Kaley said. “But geneticists don’t believe that explains his look. More and more, I think it’s a congenital issue with his pituitary gland.”
The pituitary gland, though tiny, affects everything from growth to metabolism. A developmental issue there could explain Chupey’s unique traits.
In his early years, Kaley spent hours at the vet, trying to understand his unusual features. Eventually, Chupey was diagnosed with diabetes insipidus, a rare condition that affects the body’s water balance. But with medication and a proper care routine, Chupey thrives.
“He wears sweaters and pajamas in the winter, and sunscreen in the summer,” Kaley said. “But his differences don’t slow him down at all.”
In fact, he’s unstoppable.
“All he wants to do is play fetch,” Kaley laughed. “He’ll play until he drops — and he hides toys around the house and yard, knowing exactly where they all are.”
