For centuries, wild horses have roamed Romania’s Danube delta, particularly within the Letea forest, the country’s oldest natural preserve. But in 2011, authorities declared the horses a danger to the protected forest and sought to solve the problem by shooting them or sending them off to slaughterhouses.

To rescue these wild horses, FOUR PAWS International intervened and implemented a birth control program for them, which has been successful in controlling their population. The organization continues to patrol the delta to save horses from hunters who would slaughter them for money.

During one of their patrols, a FOUR PAWS crew found a wild horse with her front legs in chains. Dr. Ovidiu Rosu, the crew’s veterinarian, tranquilized the horse and used pliers to release her trapped legs. The grateful herd-mates watched as Dr. Rosu worked, and after the release, one of them even kissed the vet.

Thanks to FOUR PAWS’ efforts, wild horses like this one can live free and safe in the Letea forest. Watch the heartwarming video of the rescue below.
