After disappearing from her home in Missouri in early June, Abby, a 13-year-old senior dog, was finally reunited with her family thanks to the brave efforts of a small group of cavers. On August 6, the cavers discovered Abby trapped 500 feet below the surface in the Berome Moore cave in Perry County. Rick Haley, a 66-year-old teacher and one of the cavers, noticed Abby and immediately set out a duffel bag to place her inside with her head sticking out to protect both her and the rescuers. Despite being underweight and frail, Abby was not hurt, and with the help of Gerry Keene, a colleague with specialized training in cave rescue, they managed to squeeze and wriggle their way through narrow spaces to bring Abby to the surface.

During the hour-long rescue mission, another caver went door-to-door looking for Abby’s owners while carrying a photo of the animal. Abby had been missing since June 9, and the Bonner family was shocked to learn that she was still alive. Although a little rattled up, Abby was happy to be out and quickly returned to her former self. The exact circumstances of how Abby got so far inside the cave remain unknown, but it is possible that she fell into an aperture while following a tiny animal and sank further due to the floods brought on by severe rains. Regardless of how she got there, Abby is now back in safe hands with her family.
