Luca, the Belgian Malinois and dedicated patrol K-9 of the Clay County Sheriff’s Department in North Carolina, had been inadvertently exposed to concentrated ozone. This exposure had plunged him into severe respiratory distress, leaving him disoriented and desperately in need of specialized care.
Finding Luca in such a condition was heart-wrenching. His handler, who had worked side by side with him for years, witnessed the devastating scene: a loyal companion struggling to breathe and vomiting in distress. The bond shared between a K-9 officer and their handler is profound, rooted in trust and shared duty. Seeing Luca in such a vulnerable state heightened the urgency of the situation.

Inside the aircraft, specialized equipment and skilled personnel worked diligently to ensure Luca received continuous care. The aim was clear: transport him to advanced veterinary treatment within the crucial “Golden Hour,” that vital window where timely intervention can mean the difference between life and death.
The flight carried Luca to the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, effectively slashing what could have been hours of travel by ground. That precious time saved was instrumental; it granted Luca a fighting chance for recovery.
The K-9 Transport Program had been rehearsed in the past but never in the face of a real emergency. This mission proved the system works, highlighting that working dogs like Luca are worthy of the same urgency and expertise as their human counterparts.
