Jessica Banzhof was busy running a quick errand, returning food to a pet store, when fate intervened in the form of Cupid, a brindle pit bull wearing an adorable little sweater. Instantly enchanted, she couldn’t resist approaching him. “I asked [the owner] if I could pet him, and then I noticed that he wasn’t actually her dog,” Banzhof shared with The Dodo. “I guess it was just kinda fate that I met him.”

Cupid was at the pet store thanks to Dogs on the Town, a heartwarming initiative by Lucas County Canine Care and Control in Ohio aimed at helping shelter dogs find forever homes. Overwhelmed with affection, Jessica texted her husband: “I met this dog, and I love him. He’s so sweet and friendly and calm.” “My boys have been begging for a larger dog,” she recalled, thinking, ‘He’s perfect.’
At that time, the Banzhof family was preparing to welcome another member. Banzhof’s 10-year-old son, Gabe, was about to be officially adopted by his stepdad. “For the longest time, when Gabe was little, it was just him and I,” Jessica reflected. “I was a single mom and we struggled, but when my husband came along, it was instant acceptance. My son has always been his son, and his family embraced Gabe like he was ‘just our grandson.’”

Excited to introduce Cupid to the family, Banzhof brought her loved ones to meet the charming pup, who, as expected, connected instantly with everyone, including their three small dogs. Yet, after paying Cupid’s adoption fee, she felt the urge to pause and sleep on her decision. On the day of Gabe’s adoption, however, emotions ran high during their visit to the courthouse. “The judge asked my son, ‘Is this what you want?’ And he said, ‘Absolutely,’” Banzhof said, tears brimming in her eyes. “Then she asked him why and he said, ‘Because I’ve been this person for so long, and I just really want to officially belong to a family who really wants, loves, and accepts me. I’ve been a part of that family, and I’m ready for my last name to match theirs.’”
After finalizing Gabe’s adoption, the family celebrated with a special meal. Not wanting the joy to end, Banzhof turned to her son and asked, “What do you want to do next?” To her delight, Gabe exclaimed, “Let’s go get my dog.” When they arrived at the shelter, Cupid’s excitement nearly matched Gabe’s as they embraced their double adoption.

“He walked in and said, ‘It’s a double adoption day!’” Banzhof recalled, joy sparkling in her eyes. “It was the best day ever.” With adoption certificates in hand, Cupid and Gabe beamed side by side, having forever changed the Banzhof household.
Cupid wasted no time settling in, becoming a cherished member of the family. He delighted in playing with his new brothers, running in the yard, and snuggling on the couch. “Cupid is still in his puppy stage, but he is so well-behaved,” Banzhof noted, relief washing over her. “He listens perfectly, he sits, he stays, he’s crate trained, and we feel so much safer now.”
After just one week together, the Banzhof family embraced a new normal filled with love and laughter. “Everything feels like we’ve gotten our contentment back,” Banzhof expressed, a warm smile spreading across her face. “It’s like, ‘We did it. We’re a family. We’re whole.’ With Cupid, it’s like he was that little piece that made the puzzle complete. Now my boys have their dog,” she added, joy evident in her voice. “It’s just perfect.”
