A dog named Cala was kept on a short chain by her owner, a mechanic living near San Jose, Costa Rica, causing her to become malnourished and unable to stand. The short chain around her neck prevented her from putting her head down, which resulted in her head hanging from the chain. The mechanic rarely fed her, and he did not take her to the vet when she got sick. Her health deteriorated, and she started having trouble breathing. Fortunately, the neighbors contacted the local police and Territorio de Zaguates, a dog sanctuary that cares for hundreds of dogs.
Lya Battle, the founder of Territorio de Zaguates, felt sad and frustrated upon seeing Cala’s condition, describing her as a pitiful creature robbed of her dignity and ready to give up. The police and the sanctuary team removed Cala from the property, and she was taken to a vet to treat her emaciation and wounds from the chain around her neck. After her treatment, Cala moved to Territorio de Zaguates, where she stayed while healing physically and emotionally.
Cala’s healing process was slow, and the humans around her had to cause her pain through the curing of her wounds. Nursing her was as painful for her as it was for them, but eventually, she understood that after the pain came love and treats. At first, Cala did not like the other dogs at the sanctuary, which led Battle to believe that Cala had never encountered other dogs or had been trained to attack them. But Cala slowly began to trust the other dogs as well as the people around her.
In June, people snuck into the sanctuary and laid out sausages baited with poison, which killed 16 dogs. Cala had also eaten a sausage, but she survived. She struggled with neurological problems for a while after that, but she came around again. After this incident, Cala moved to a foster home where she is currently receiving love and attention.
Cala has become quite mischievous, but her foster mom loves it. Battle finds Cala’s story particularly uplifting, describing it as an epic battle of good against bad and of hate against love, and in the end, love wins. This rescue is a love-wins-don’t-give-up kind of rescue that fuels their stubborn madness a while longer.
