Coyotes, distant relatives of domestic dogs, can sometimes display surprisingly dog-like behaviors. Recently, a homeowner had an unusual encounter with a “couch potato” coyote that decided to make itself at home on the patio furniture. This fascinating interaction highlights the fascinating similarities between these wild canines and our beloved pets.

The homeowner stumbled upon a “beautiful coyote” comfortably napping on their outdoor patio furniture. Despite the homeowner’s presence, the coyote seemed reluctant to vacate its newfound cozy spot. Concerned that the animal might be sick or injured, the homeowner contacted Animal Control San Francisco for assistance.

Animal Control Officer Mullen arrived promptly to address the situation. In a light-hearted tone, the officer told the “sleepy coyote couch potato” that it was time to get up and move along to find a more suitable resting place. The coyote eventually obliged, stretching before leaving its comfortable nap spot.

Officer Mullen later shared on Facebook that the coyote appeared to be in good health, moving appropriately, and showing no signs of illness or injury. The animal leaped over a wall and disappeared into the surrounding brush.

The officer explained that the coyote was likely a young, healthy male who had recently left his den and was exploring the city. This behavior is typical for male coyotes during this time of the year when they leave their home dens in search of mates and territories to start their own dens.

Coyotes are generally not aggressive, but they can exhibit assertive behavior when they feel threatened or are protecting their young. Officer Mullen encouraged people to contact animal control if they encounter a coyote that raises concerns.

This amusing encounter serves as a reminder of the shared traits between coyotes and domestic dogs. The image of the coyote napping on the patio furniture is reminiscent of a typical household dog, showcasing the fascinating and sometimes amusing connections between wild animals and their domestic counterparts.
