In the world of shelter dogs, not every story has a fairy tale ending. Some dogs wait for years to find a loving home, and sadly, many never get adopted. But recently, one heartwarming tale unfolded, proving that even the longest wait can lead to a “happily ever after.”
Meet Cinderella, a sweet pit bull-terrier mix who spent an astonishing 1,139 days in the spcaLA’s Long Beach shelter. Despite her loving nature, a fondness for playtime, and a penchant for belly rubs, Cinderella remained overlooked for years.
Her journey to adoption was akin to finding the owner of a glass slipper, with several near-misses. In a bittersweet twist, she was adopted earlier this year but returned a day later because of her size. “It’s just been a very long road,” shared Ana Bustilloz, the shelter’s communications and marketing director. “For very special dogs, they need the perfect family, the perfect fit, and we do everything to reach those people.”
In 2020, Cinderella underwent surgery for a torn ligament, thanks to generous donations, and made a full recovery. Throughout her time at the shelter, she received extensive training and enrichment, making her an ideal candidate for a new home. Despite her remarkable qualities, it felt as if no one wanted to provide Cinderella with the forever home she deserved. At six years old, she had spent half her life waiting to be adopted.
Then, a miracle happened. Jasika Sarceno and her family visited the shelter, seeking to meet the dog who had been there the longest. At 1,139 days, that dog was Cinderella. The family instantly connected with her, defying common misconceptions about older dogs and pit bull mixes. “She chose us. We didn’t choose her,” said Jesika Sarceno, “I’m teaching my children that many animals are left behind because of their age and breed.”
Now, Cinderella has found her place in the Sarceno family, alongside kids and four cats. Though her name is changed to “Lola,” her story remains a true Cinderella tale with a fairy tale ending. She brings joy and love to her new home, displaying a playful and protective nature.
Cinderella’s long-awaited adoption is a heartwarming testament to the resilience of shelter dogs and the love that transforms their lives. Share this beautiful news if you’re a dog lover and believe in happy endings.
