Mr. Muggles, an extraordinary dog with special needs, has a heartwarming tale of resilience. Born with hydrocephalus, a condition causing pressure on the brain due to excess spinal fluid, Mr. Muggles faced a challenging start to life. His breeder, unable to care for him, surrendered him to Road Dogs, a dedicated rescue organization.
Road Dogs’ volunteers nursed Mr. Muggles back to health, and he found a loving foster mom, Bella. Eventually, he discovered his forever home with Blake, who drove a staggering 17 hours from Los Angeles to Seattle to bring him home. Due to the pressure on their brains, hydrocephalic dogs like Mr. Muggles cannot fly, necessitating the long road trip.
While hydrocephalus manifests differently in dogs, Mr. Muggles, though developmentally simple, is a loving, affectionate, and joyful companion who adores sitting on people’s laps. However, the two openings in his skull make him susceptible to head injuries throughout his life. Here’s where Blake’s ingenuity shines.
Drawing upon his automotive background, Blake crafted a custom helmet for Mr. Muggles to safeguard his head. Conventional dog helmets lack adequate padding, a crucial element for Mr. Muggles’ safety. Blake used a stencil of Mr. Muggles’ head, applied hand-laid carbon fiber, and incorporated padding to create the specialized helmet now worn by the pup.
This helmet, currently a prototype, is a labor of love, offering both protection for Mr. Muggles and peace of mind for Blake, knowing his cherished companion is safe from harm. Blake plans to enhance this design further, ensuring Mr. Muggles continues to enjoy life to the fullest.
Despite his medical condition, Mr. Muggles experiences no pain or discomfort and embraces life with boundless enthusiasm. His presence can turn an ordinary day into something extraordinary, making even gloomy moments brighter.

Mr. Muggles may be described as a “lovable lemon” or an “underdog,” but assisting them in leading fulfilling lives is profoundly rewarding.
