Recently, on a routine delivery route in Virginia, Alex Badecker, a dedicated FedEx driver, became an unexpected savior for two emaciated pit bulls. “I pulled over. I was checking to see if they had any tags or anything like that, nothing on them,” Alex recounted. “But as soon as I saw them… it nearly made me cry.”
After completing the day’s deliveries, Alex’s first thought was the welfare of these distressed pit bulls. It was evident that they had endured immense hardship and suffering. Despite having a busy schedule, Alex’s sense of duty and compassion compelled them to act.
“I knew I needed to finish that last delivery, but I kept thinking it would be wrong to leave them,” Alex shared. The pit bulls’ well-being weighed heavily on their mind.
Following their heart, Alex took the dogs to the nearby Morgan’s Mutts Rescue, where the journey to recovery and new beginnings began. The pit bulls, who would soon be named FedEx and Autumn, were given the chance they so desperately needed.
As the days went by, it became apparent that FedEx was facing an uphill battle. Medical examinations revealed a mass in his small bowel that made surgery unlikely to save him. The difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize FedEx, freeing him from pain and suffering. It was a poignant farewell, and Morgan’s Mutts shared a touching message on social media: “FedEx, you were loved and cared for for 4 and a half days. I hope that was enough time for you to have felt safe & loved.”
Autumn, however, displayed resilience and a will to survive. She gradually regained her strength and health. Medical assessments confirmed that she was negative for tick diseases and heartworm. It was a testament to her indomitable spirit.
Despite the stray hold period coming to an end, no one came forward to claim Autumn. It was time for her to find a new loving home, and it was a familiar face that stepped in.
Alex, who had been keeping tabs on the dogs’ progress, decided to take on the role of foster parent. Recognizing the special bond that had formed between them, Alex made the heartfelt decision to provide Autumn with a nurturing and loving home.
This match was a case of destiny aligning. Morgan’s Mutts shared on Facebook, “[Alex] has been considering adding another dog for over a year, but nothing has really caught [their] eye, until now!” With the decision to foster Autumn, Alex had found a new furry family member.
Renamed “Iris” by her new guardian, the dog symbolized hope, just like a rainbow. Alex shared their hope for Iris to have a bright and happy future.
Under Alex’s care, Iris thrived. She gained weight and blossomed into a happy, affectionate, and playful dog. The transformation from a pitiful, emaciated creature on the roadside to a joyful and spirited companion was nothing short of remarkable.
