In a heartwarming yet bittersweet tale of human-animal bonding, Ndakasi, an orphaned gorilla known for a viral selfie, has passed away. Ndakasi’s journey began tragically in 2007 when park rangers in Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of Congo, found her clinging to her mother’s lifeless body, a victim of poaching. Ranger Andre Bauma became her caretaker, forming an unbreakable bond. This connection was immortalized in a viral selfie featuring Ndakasi and her friend Ndeze posing with ranger Mathieu Shamavu. Despite a prolonged illness, Ndakasi did not face her end alone; she was cradled by Andre, her lifelong friend. Ndakasi’s story emphasizes the profound relationships that can form between humans and animals, echoing a message of conservation and protection.
Virunga National Park, a refuge for endangered mountain gorillas threatened by illegal poaching, witnessed Ndakasi’s tragic beginnings. She was just two months old when park rangers discovered her clinging to her mother’s lifeless body, a victim of armed militia. Knowing that the baby gorilla was orphaned, they took her under their care, and ranger Andre Bauma quickly formed a deep bond with her. He held her close through the night, providing warmth and comfort.
Ndakasi, now orphaned, adapted to her new life at the park alongside another orphan, Ndeze, and maintained her close bond with her caretakers.
The world glimpsed their remarkable bond in 2019 through a viral photo that captivated hearts globally. Ndakasi and Ndeze posed for a “selfie” with their friend and caretaker, Mathieu Shamavu. The gorillas stood upright, seemingly posing for the endearing picture.
The image quickly became a sensation, leaving many in disbelief at its authenticity. Yet, it beautifully portrayed the deep trust and connection between these gorillas and their human caregivers. Virunga National Park praised their “cheeky” personalities and highlighted the special relationship between humans and great apes.
Tragically, Ndakasi’s journey came to an end on September 26, following a prolonged illness. However, a poignant and heartbreaking photo captured her final moments, cradled in the arms of her lifelong friend, Andre Bauma, the same ranger who had provided comfort when she was an orphan.
Reflecting on Ndakasi’s life, Andre Bauma stated, “It was a privilege to support and care for such a loving creature, especially knowing the trauma Ndakasi suffered at a very young age.” He emphasized Ndakasi’s sweet nature and intelligence, underscoring the importance of protecting great apes.
The park also celebrated the selfie that brought Ndakasi fame, noting its role in spreading a positive message about gorillas and their caregivers. Virunga National Park’s tribute to Ndakasi encapsulates the depth of these remarkable bonds formed between orphaned animals and their human caretakers.
