As the clock struck 9:30 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas, Corporal Perry was on a mission to respond to a distress call. A stray pit bull, reportedly aggressive, was barking incessantly at a home’s front door. Despite the ominous description, Perry’s arrival did not reveal the fierce beast she had imagined.
Instead, she was met with a poignant sight—a frightened little girl nestled in an abandoned car seat, desperately seeking warmth amid the storm.

San Antonio was caught in the grips of a harsh winter storm, with cold winds sweeping through the streets. Even Corporal Perry, clad in her warm jacket, struggled against the chill. It quickly became clear that the dog, whom she later named Martha, had been surviving on the streets for far too long. Her thin fur covered ribs hinted at countless struggles.
As Perry approached the timid dog, Martha remained motionless, glancing back only to turn away. It was a heartbreaking moment, caught in a dance between hope and fear. Did this gentle creature truly believe that a human would show her kindness?

Understanding Martha’s need for warmth and safety, Corporal Perry gently led her to a waiting truck, its interior lined with the promise of a cozy blanket. To her surprise, Martha eagerly jumped inside, her wagging tail a small beacon of hope as she awaited a microchip scan.
“It was nothing short of miraculous how quickly she came around,” Perry reflected. “It was as if she knew, in that moment, I was there to help her.”
At the shelter, Martha indulged in the food placed before her, a feast she clearly longed for. Her curious spirit came to life as she explored a crate of toys, choosing a beloved stuffed animal to call her own.

Lisa Norwood, public relations manager for City of San Antonio Animal Care Services, shared, “Martha is underweight, heartworm positive, and has clearly had a tough past.” Yet, despite her hardships, the warmth she felt during this brief rescue ignited a flicker of optimism. For Martha to have a real chance at life, she needed more than just shelter; she had to learn the ways of a loving family.
Enter the Mains family, who spotted Martha’s story online and stepped up to foster her. In their warm home, Martha’s true personality began to shine brightly. She started picking up on manners from her three foster dog siblings, finding solace and comfort in this newfound family.
“Her fosters say she has settled in wonderfully, even joining them in bed at night,” Norwood smiled. “But privacy is a thing of the past—Martha follows them everywhere!”
Motivated by her nurturing environment, Martha also found comfort in the small tokens of love scattered around her foster home. From the plush toys she lovingly collected to her cherished bear from the shelter, these items filled her world with joy.
Martha is currently undergoing heartworm treatment and steadily gaining weight, her resilience making her more incredible each day. Soon, she will be ready to seek a forever family—a family that can offer her a warm dog bed and endless cuddles.
This Velcro pup deserves so much more than the frigid embrace of an abandoned car seat, and with each passing moment, the possibility of a brighter future grows clearer.
